Alas Indigo

Designed, woven, and dyed by Wenceslao Martinez.

Assisted by Jacobo Martinez.

Alas Indigo comes from the Alas series, a group of works inspired by bird wings against sunlight. On the artist’ balcony in Teotitlan, flocks of birds often line up to observe the mountain-ringed valley below. In Alas Indigo, the wool mimics their feathers. Colored yarns begin to break up the darks in the weaving as a reference to the black and blue iridescence of crows.

Hand Spun Oaxacan Churro wool, dyed with: cochineal, indigo, with natural cream, grey, and black.
